How to Organize the Harbor Freight US General Small Toolbox

The Harbor Freight US General small toolbox is one of the best values in the shop. The drawers are shallow, the footprint is compact, and it holds far more than it looks like it should. The problem shows up about a week after you fill it: everything slides.
Shallow drawers are the reason. There is not enough depth for tools to wedge against each other, so every time you pull a drawer open the contents shift a little further from where you left them. Within a month you are digging.
Start by deciding what each drawer is for
Before buying or printing anything, assign a job to each drawer. The most common layout that works:
- Top drawer — precision drivers, picks, small hex keys. Things you reach for constantly and lose easily.
- Second drawer — pliers, cutters, snips.
- Third drawer — sockets and ratchets.
- Bottom drawer — wrenches, breaker bars, anything heavy.
Weight matters here. Heavy tools in a top drawer make the whole box want to tip when the drawer is open. Put the mass low.
Why loose tools slide and what actually stops it
There are three common approaches, and they are not equally good in a shallow drawer.
Foam inserts hold tools well but eat vertical space you do not have, and they absorb oil and solvent over time. In a shallow drawer, foam thickness comes directly out of tool clearance.
Loose bins and dividers keep categories separated but do nothing about sliding. The bin slides instead of the tool.
Fitted trays sized to the drawer are the best fit for this box specifically. They sit flat, use almost no vertical space, and each tool has a defined slot. When a tool is missing, you see it immediately.
The magnet question
Magnets are useful, but only in the right places. A tray full of light tools does not need them — once loaded, the weight holds it down. The pieces that genuinely need magnets are the heavy ones: wrench blocks, ratchet holders, breaker bar holders. Those are heavy enough to build momentum when the drawer moves and will walk around the drawer without something anchoring them.
Magnetizing every piece roughly doubles the cost of a set, and magnets are the most expensive component in the build. Putting them where they do work and leaving them out where they do not is the more sensible approach.
Organize what you actually own
The mistake most people make is buying a generic organizer and then trying to make their tools fit it. It half works, and the leftover gaps fill up with junk within a month.
Organizers cut for a specific tool set are the opposite: every slot exists because a tool goes in it. There is no leftover space to fill, and the layout tells you at a glance what is missing.

A note on material
If you are printing your own or buying printed organizers, material matters more than it sounds like it should. PLA is fine on a bench but softens in a hot garage or a truck bed. ABS and PETG both hold their shape through summer heat and take repeated tool removal without cracking. For anything that lives in a working toolbox, skip PLA.
Do it once
Organizing a toolbox is one of those jobs that is genuinely satisfying to finish and genuinely annoying to redo. Assign your drawers, get trays cut for the tools you own, put magnets under the heavy pieces, and it stays organized on its own.
